Russia is No Europe

January 31, 2012 // 15 Comments

Believe you me but I’m not one of those to complain about anything even if I’m living in Russia(people complain here a lot) but most importantly, I’m grateful to God for everything he has done for me. It was/is for me a privilege to go on vacations and having enjoyed the winter break with my family in Finland, I cannot help but notice the contrast between the two countries.Finland and Russia that is. Oh well, it’s not like my own country is any better, but if Russia claims to be a giant in Europe, then it should be in action and not just size. Size is NOTHING! Finland came across as a ‘strange’ country to me. Strange in a very powerful and positive way and each time I think ofFinland, I say to myself, how did they do it? And it wasn’t just the readily and available social infrastructures or the weather, but rather the atmosphere, environment and above all THE PEOPLE! During my holidays there, I noticed that Finnish people are very nice, welcoming and have more than ONE CHILD. I saw parents with three to four kids!!! I live in Moscow and I’d be lucky to see a [...]

Permanent Resident Permit for Africans in Russia

December 6, 2011 // 1 Comment

As mentioned in my previous post here (how to secure a Temporary Resident Permit in Russia), the next stage in becoming a FULL resident in Russia is to secure a Permanent Resident Permit (PRP). The Permanent Resident Permit (PRP) in itself is not that “permanent” because you will have to (according to the new law) “renew” your “propiska” (i.e your registration and place of address) every five years. Not only that, you will also have to visit the local Migration Office every year to inform them that you are still in the country. You will be given a form to fill and part of the form/leaflet (signed and stamped) returned to you. PLEASE! DO NOT FORGET TO COLLECT THIS FROM THEM! IT IS VERY IMPORTANT The Permanent Resident Permit (called “Vid na Jitelstvo) is valid for five years (but not longer than the validity of your international passport) and can be extended till well, eternity. So what documents do you need to secure a new PRP: 1. A completed Application form (in 2 copies) 2. 4 passport photographs (34*45mm) Sample "Russian Permanent Resident Permit" 3. A valid Temporary Resident Permit 4. A Statement of Bank Account or any other documents [...]

October 10, 2011 // 0 Comments

In Russia they say there are two main problems – Fools and Bad Roads. The below caption clearly illustrates the latter. Bad roads. Russian roads I hear are legendary!!! Really, there is not much to write about as the picture speaks for itself. A GIANT hole in the middle of the road with a tree. Kudos to the person who thought of planting one there because, I’m not sure everyone would have noticed it from afar. Amazing isn’t it watching how the drivers try to maneuver  their way by the road?  How careful and skillful they did it? How do you pass by such roads at night? Is Russia safe for Africans (Blacks)

September 9, 2011 // 8 Comments

Is Russia safe for Africans? Is Russia safe for Africans? or shall I say, how safe is Russia for Blacks? I was inspired to write this piece after I received an e-mail from a certain British gentleman ( I assume he is Black) and whose partner happens to be Russian. He wanted to know if it was safe enough for him to come to Russia to visit his partner? ah! I say! What won’t you do for love eh? (you can put a smile on your face here and make an “awww” sound.) Thanks. Now to answer the question. Is it safe? Well, this is not a yes or no answer? But you can make your life safer if you follow the below tips: 1. Don’t walk alone especially at night. 2. Avoid dark or unlighted areas 3. Try to avoid the metro on football match-days.
